Kriss-Elin Haldorsen - Assignment #2: Will it be adopted?

Shouting Vase - A vase that holds your anger

$67

This is a vase that turns your loudest sounds of frustration into whispers. The vase is made out of plastic and is design to fit around your mouth. When you scream into the vase, it will then “storage” the sound in the vase and then release a softer version of your scream through a small whole on the bottom of the vase.

Relative advantage: Not only does the vase release a softer version of your scream when you feel like shouting, but it also can be used by someone who speaks loudly. Another advantage by using this vase is that you can use it as decoration in your house or in another different place. If you should compare this product to another object it would be a pillow. The reason for this it is that you can scream into a pillow and the sound would appear softer than normal, and it can also be used as a decoration. The relative advantage here is that through the vase you can clearly understand what a loud person would say, but by speaking through a pillow the sound would come out rather unclear.

Compatibility: I would say that it’s not normal or social accepted to scream loudly in public places. So there might be people who would feel uncomfortable if this device was used in public, even though it makes a softer version of the scream.

Complexity: This type of product it not supposed to be difficult to understand. At first look this shouting vase might just look like a regular plastic vase, but when you become aware that it is a shouting vase it is easy to see how you can use it.

Observability: There is an observable difference if you choose to use it or to not use it when you need to scream, but with this product you cannot predict if you will use it tomorrow. Therefor it can be taken in account that this product can be seen as less observable.

Adaptability: This product is low for adaptability since it can only be used as a shouting vase or a decoration. However, you can upgrade the product by adding different sounds to it. So for example when you scream into the vase an animal sound would appear instead of a lower scream.

Conclusion: I believe that this product does not have a good chance to be adopted because it is not very unique. There is good chance that most people have pillows in their houses, and it is therefore cheaper to scream into one of those instead of a buying a shouting vase to scream in. Even if a person talk’s very loud I do not think they will be willing to talk into the vase every time. Since you cannot predict your next frustrated moment or your next load conversation you have to carry it with you, and it can be too big to do so. This can make the product less observable and when a product is less observable there is a high risk that it will not be adopted. However, if you are a frustrated person who screams a lot I think this is a product that can be worth buying.
